In 2021, Mark Carney helped launch the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) during COP26. GFANZ was an umbrella coalition of financial-sector groups (banks, asset managers, insurers, etc.). It was billed as a “unified effort to steer global finance to net-zero emissions by 2050”. GFANZ‘s goal was to “align global finance with net-zero emissions by 2050”, effectively pushing capital away from activities it deemed high-carbon. Ultimately GFANZ‘s and its core group, Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) failed. It began coming apart by 2023 as major U.S. banks withdrew. These high-profile departures gutted its influence, effectively shutting it down.
