You don't get a bunch of paid sick days, you get endless paid sick days. After 6 weeks of sickness with the same kind of sickness the payment is reduced to approx. 75% of your regular salary (it's lower if you earn really a lot).

no, you don't get a bunch of paid sick days. you get all the sick days. you currently get 6 weeks fully paid and then a reduction to 60% but per each sickness. if you get sick 4 times you get 6 weeks each fully paid. but there is discussions to reduce that in the near future unfortunately

I remember living in San Francisco in the 80s and worked full time and lived in a small hotel. Only 2 weeks, unpaid vacation Moved to Switzerland in 89 and my first job at the airport was a shock. 5 weeks paid vacation, insurance, sick leave, pension plan, child support etc. 🥰👏

You’re also paying into the German retirement fund (you and your employer each pay 50%) and into the unemployment ‘insurance’. If you work for 12 months and then get unemployed you will receive unemployment money (I think 80% of your monthly pay) for 12 months or until you find a new job.
