good explanation though its not exactly a random place a random ancestor lived. its where the first ancestor became a citizen and thats much more abstract hundreds of years ago than you might think. My first ancestor who became a citizen bought himself out of lehn and registered in the municipality he had worked in in 1534

Yes and then I never know what to put down on ducments when I travel somewhere else when it asks for place of birth… do I put where I was actually born or do i put what it is in my passport to avoid second guessing??

When my German dad got his citizenship, he got the same Heimatort as my mom, so he now has a place in his passport where his wife's ancestors lived, which is kinda funny to me
