Honest question. My daughter is learning sign because she is autistic and has selective mutism. Would it be wrong for me to use both verbal speech and sign to communicate with her? She's only two.

It’s amazing that you say this and don’t take advantage of the stuff you could be. Thank you for being honest!

I'm not deaf but I've been trying to learn sign because of how long I've been non verbal. I've been unable to speak for over 4 months. and before when I could speak the periods where I could were becoming less and less. what kind of signing would be appropriate for me.

hey does anyone in here, have any good tips for learning sign? I have a deaf cousin, and sometimes have a hard time communicating with her, and I would really love to be able to sign fluently, but still can't get a hold of more than the basic signs also do you guys think it's ok to speak and sign while you are still learning?

I am hard of hearing I am learning ASL with lessons I often don't have a place where I can practice ASL with other people so sometimes I will try to talk and sign at the same time to get practice and so I can remember ASL because I don't rely on ASL to talk through out the day. So overall I do sometimes speak and sign is that okay?

When I’m stressed I sign. Totally confusing in the real world. We lost our brother at the shops one time and started signing instead of talking 😂🙃 we found him! All good just funny now.

I’m hearing but grew up with sign, Sim-Com is hard! I’ve been signing since I was a baby and I struggle with even spelling and saying my name out loud 😂

I agree but I want to point out that for a lot of jobs working with the Deaf community, SimComm is necessary. I’m an audiology student at Gallaudet and SimComm is often expected when we work with deaf clients. It is a skill we have to develop along with ASL

I talk and sign at the same time because my mom needs me too, she struggles with just sign and just speech. She understands better when I do both.

As an autistic person with occasional verbal shut-downs, overstimulation and exhaustion, or when words simply feels too hard, I would love to use ASL.

Can I ask why you choose not to speak the word sim-com? Is it just because it’s not a well known word in hearing spaces?

i think in real life, there are some circumstances that are okay to talk and sign together tho! I work with a neurodivergent kid and her parents are deaf but she doesn't know how to fully communicate in either language. when i work with her, i talk and sign at the same time so she can take in both languages. I also will usually use correct asl grammar along with my correct English grammar so she can get both! sometimes i will turn off my voice and only sign but because she isn't fully fluent in sign, i do usually use both to help her be more fluent in both languages.

I’m curious to see you SIGN and talk at the same time if that makes sense. Sign like you normally would and attempt to translate without changing grammar. I’m sorry if that’s a silly request, I’m still learning!
