I think it’s more nuanced. I see it as “I’m sitting here alone in this kiddie pool of emotion and I don’t want to feel alone”. So they are trying (poorly) to connect with someone. To feel less alone.

These are always excellent responses in the moment that you teach. However, what I’ve not heard your address is the simple fact that regardless of how the bullied person may respond in that moment it is an indisputable fact that those words from the bully still hurt. And so the question comes what are you providing to that bullying person to help them heal from the pain later?
