Cass, my underappreciated baby[cry] people who don’t understand her villain arc, did we watch the same Rapunzel and the great tree ep?! The whole point of her character was to find a purpose. A purpose she thought was to be Rapunzel’s protector or captain of the guard, but quickly learned that in these roles, she would always be at a disposition to her best friend’s royal status and undermined. She scraped and fought for every opportunity she was ever given, while Rapunzel’s naivety and wealth gave her a life that heavily contradicted/condescended Cassandra’s without her even realising so until it was too late. It was never about being a morally good or bad person for Cass, the moonstone was her armour. A symbol of the power, direction and acknowledgment she had been denied off her whole life.
