@brandonknoxphotography: The Calliope Projects were once one of the largest and most well-known public housing developments in New Orleans, located near the Central City neighborhood. Built in 1941, the Calliope Projects became home to thousands of working-class families and developed a deep cultural connection to the city’s music, food, Mardi Gras traditions, and street culture. Over the decades, the area gained a reputation for both strong community pride and high crime rates, especially during the crack epidemic of the 1980s and 1990s. Despite the struggles, many former residents speak about the projects as a place filled with family bonds, resilience, and unforgettable memories. The Calliope Projects also had a major influence on New Orleans hip-hop culture, with artists and rappers often referencing “the Calliope” in music and interviews. After the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, the housing development was eventually demolished and replaced with mixed-income housing, marking the end of an important chapter in New Orleans history while leaving behind a lasting cultural legacy. #neworleans #brandonknox #calliope #neworleanshistory #fyp
