Why not cultivate a need to LIVE for something? A most glorious, heroic, and honorable way to transcend ourselves through noble pursuit? You don’t need to die for something. That’s just a cry from the ego to BE something MORE than itself, to be a martyr, a tale in a history book. Is ink on a page worth more than living for something truly noble and righteous? “Dying for something” is a fantasy, while living for something allows you to give more to those who need you.

I think Mishima’s life is such an interesting case study in how modernization affected Japan’s people. Although I don’t believe Mishima was a good role model or person to look up to/follow his beliefs, he makes some interesting points.
