What to know before summiting👇🏼(I’m not an expert but if you asked me, this is what I’d tell you): 🏔️ A $20 climbing permit from Recreation.gov and a free wilderness permit from Wy’East lodge are required. 🏔️ Route: Mount Hood from Timberline via Old Chute (ideal route for beginners). 7.1 miles and 5,308 ft elevation gain. Climbing season is April - June. ⏰ Start early and give yourself PLENTY of time. Starting early is imperative to avoid ice fall as the sun hits and temperatures warm on Old Chute. ☀️ You’ll need a 48 hour weather window with clear skies, no precipitation, and as little wind as possible. Check the forecast on mountain-forecast.com. Check current conditions and hazards @mthoodclimbingrangers. 🏔️ Be familiar with your gear and know how to put on your crampons and use your ice axe to self arrest and practice it before your climb. 🏔️ It’s highly recommended to take an avalanche safety and crevasse rescue course ahead of time. 🎒What you’ll bring: * Print out your permit and carry it on you with your government issued photo ID. * 2 ice axes * Crampons * Microspikes * Mountaineering boots * Poles * Climbing helmet * Snowshoes if there’s fresh/deep snow * Gloves * Water * High carb/sugar snacks (avoid fiber) * Sunglasses * SOS device * First aid kit * Ibuprofen * Headlamp * Sunscreen * Hand and toe warmers if you run cold 🥾 What you’ll wear: * Base layers * Fleece or puffer midlayer (or both if it’s super cold) * Shell jacket * Softshell pants * Beanie * Gloves/mittens * Face covering * Wool socks ‼️ Know the risk before you go. Mount Hood is a dangerous and technical summit. People die on the mountain every year. Don’t underestimate it. ‼️Don’t linger at Devils Kitchen. The sulfur gas can make you feel extremely sick and mimics symptoms of altitude sickness. ‼️Know the signs of altitude sickness (dizziness, nausea, heart racing, difficulty breathing and chest pain) and be ready to descend IMMEDIATELY if it becomes severe. #hike #Hiking #mounthood #mthood #mountaineering Hike hiking climbing mountaineering summit Mount mt hood guide beg
