The story of the State of Pasundan (Negara Pasundan) is a classic tale of a political entity caught between two worlds: the dying breath of Dutch colonialism and the unstoppable momentum of Indonesian independence. Here is the timeline of its formation, peak, and eventual collapse. 1. The Formation (1947 – 1948) The Dutch aimed to create a "federal" Indonesia to weaken the Republic's influence. This was part of the Malino Conference strategy to surround the Republic of Indonesia (centered in Yogyakarta) with Dutch-friendly states. The First Attempt (1947): A Dutch-backed group called the Partai Rakyat Pasundan (PRP) declared a state in May 1947, but it failed because it lacked local support. The West Java Conferences: Between late 1947 and early 1948, three conferences were held in Bandung. The Dutch tried to handpick leaders, but the Sundanese delegates were surprisingly nationalistic. Official Birth: On February 26, 1948, the State of Pasundan was officially established. The President: To the Dutch's surprise, the delegates elected Raden Aria Adipati Wiranatakoesoema, a former Republic of Indonesia minister, as President. This gave the state a "pro-Republic" flavor from the start. 2. The Heyday (1949) The "peak" of Pasundan occurred during the transition to the Republic of the United States of Indonesia (RIS). For a brief moment, it functioned as a sophisticated sovereign entity. Government Structure: It had a fully functioning Parliament (Parlemen Pasundan), a Cabinet, and its own flag (Green-White-Green). The "Third Way": Many Pasundan leaders, like Prime Minister Adil Puradiredja, tried to position the state as a bridge. They wanted to maintain Sundanese autonomy while remaining loyal to the broader Indonesian national cause. Diplomatic Role: Pasundan was one of the most influential members of the Bijeenkomst voor Federaal Overleg (BFO), the assembly of federal states that negotiated with both the Dutch and the Republic during the Round Table Conference in The Hague. 3. The Dissolution (Early 1950) The state's downfall was swift and violent, triggered by three main pressures: The APRA Coup (January 1950): Captain Raymond Westerling and his APRA forces (loyal to the Dutch) launched a bloody attack in Bandung. They claimed to be "protecting" Pasundan's autonomy, but their brutality turned the public entirely against the idea of a separate state. The Unitary Movement: After the APRA incident, the people of West Java held massive demonstrations. They viewed the federal system as a Dutch "divide and conquer" tactic. The slogan "Kembali ke Kesatuan" (Return to Unity) became the cry of the masses. The Legal End: February 1950: The Pasundan Parliament, under heavy pressure and internal division, began to dissolve itself. March 8, 1950: President Wiranatakoesoema officially handed over his mandate to the RIS government. Final Merger: By April 1950, the State of Pasundan was formally abolished and reintegrated into the Republic of Indonesia as the Province of West Java. #fyp #nationalist
