But hear me out there should not be a charge to be able to select your seats so that you are sitting next to your child. It should be automatic. The airlines asked the age of each passenger, so they should know that there is a child with an adult that need to be sitting next to each other. You can’t even buy a seat for a child without purchasing one for an adult or calling the airline.

Thank you for being kind!! Last year I had my seat changed and was separated by the airline from my 1 year old. I had to ask a gentleman to switch with me, thankfully it was aisle for aisle and he switched without complaint but I was *terrified* to ask. It isn’t always lack of planning on the parents part. I paid for and booked seats together but they changed the plane and switched our seats and there were no other seats we could switch to in advance

As a mom to small kids my worst nightmare is having cancelled flights and ending up standby and not seated together. You are a real one for that one because I’m sure that mom was 30 seconds from crying.

I used to think just like you but we just checked our seats for our flight this summer and the airline changed the plane and the seat configuration changed…our 18 month old was on a row without us- sometimes it truly is on the airline and not the parents!

When I was like 4 years old my aunt had a wedding in Costa Rica and on the way to the airport home our car broke down and we missed the 2 hour check in to keep our seats all together so me (4 years old) and my mom who were supposed to be sat together and my dad and my brother who was (7 years old) and all got separated. We got on the plane and my brother and dad were close to eachother so that was fine but me at 4 years old was between two strangers in the back of the plane far from my family so my mom had to like beg them to move which they weren’t willing to do but eventually she said okay you can take care of my crying 4 year old on this long flight (expecting them to move after that) and they finally did because they realized they’d rather move and change one seat than stay next to a crying child because I was scared to not be with my mom

Exactly this, It is situational. If a flight attendant comes up and is nice and kind is like I’m not gonna make anyone I can’t make anyone but is anyone willing to. Yes. But if you are rude and mean or clearly didn’t plan correctly no.

My sister did this too and she got bumped to first class. We were literally the last row and th mom wanted to sit next to her kid - not even good seats. She was asked by the mom since she was sitting next to the kid and she didn’t care lol the flight attendant heard this and moved her to first class. I truly believe flight attendants appreciate it when the people making the request aren’t a-holes and causing a scene AND the person giving it up is nice too.

You never know whether they’ve had to get that flight last minute with zero preparation in an emergency or something so they may not have had the opportunity to sit together! I’d always move if I was travelling solo cos what difference does it make really!

Parent of a small child here: my last 3 flights I paid extra to sit next to my child in economy plus. The airline separated us every time and wouldn’t change it. I had to beg people to switch with me. I literally showed my booking email with our seats together to sit next to my 4 year old on our last flight. People have no clue how much the airlines screw with things.

I think the airlines should do better at keeping passengers with young children together. Even if that means having to bump someone to comfort or first class for the inconvenience. It’s not fair to those who paid for their preferred seating to lose money to be helpful and not fair to the families who are stressed trying to ask someone to switch seats either.

If you get a ticket with a small child the airline should automatically put them together even if they didn’t pay for seats. They shouldn’t get to pick and choose where they sit but they should definitely be together.

I’m 4’11 so I almost never pay for my seat and am happy to move wherever. Recently I was offered a comfort plus seat by a guy who wanted to sit by his girlfriend!

having a child under 12 not next to a parent is a safety issue. Masks on, Etc. So the DOT needs to force airlines to seat families together at no cost. Some airline regulation would be great. Thanks.
