I wanted to build something like Udemy. But built for Kenyans. With M-Pesa payments. Local pricing. Local language. Local context. A platform Kenyans could actually use without struggling. So I went looking for a developer. The first development firm I approached gave me a quote of 280,000 shillings. For a basic version. They sent me a demo. I did not like the demo. The design was outdated. The flow was clunky. It did not feel like the platform I had in my head. The second firm quoted 600,000 shillings. The third firm quoted over 1 million shillings. One million. For a learning platform. I sat down and asked myself a question. Are these the only options? Pay 1 million to a developer who might still not deliver what I want? Or use Udemy and lose a huge percentage of every sale to them? Both options were terrible. That is when I discovered AI tools like Lovable. I sat down with Claude. I described exactly what I wanted. Course pages. Student logins. M-Pesa integration. Certificates. Progress tracking. Quizzes. Everything. Claude helped me write the perfect prompt. I pasted it into Lovable. A few days later I had my own platform. Built from scratch. Exactly the way I wanted it. Total cost. Around 20,000 shillings. Versus 1 million shillings. That is a 50 times difference. The barriers to building software in Africa have collapsed. You no longer need 1 million shillings or a developer's mercy. You just need AI tools and clarity on what you want.
