@kporter.stuff: The conical spring’s variable rate and near-flat solid height are the two properties that make it irreplaceable in certain applications, battery contacts, thin push-button mechanisms, and any assembly where a cylindrical spring’s solid height creates a packaging problem. The progressive stiffening behavior is either what you want or something to design around, depending on the load profile. Know both properties before you specify it, and you’ll know exactly when to reach for it. 🙌🏼⚙️

Their geometry also gives a nice little by-product. They are much less likely to recoil perpendicular to their travel- eg battery cases etc. Stable enough to not require a guide.

Love your content. They're using conical springs in mattresses now so they can compress them for easy shipping. Just pop the sealed bag, and whoosh, a mattress.
