Understanding what these sensors do and how they fail is a key step in efficient car troubleshooting and can save you significant time and money on unnecessary car repair jobs. The infographic above provides a great visual overview, and I’ve broken down the key symptoms to watch out for. Here’s a quick guide to six crucial sensors and their associated failures: 1. Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor): 🚗 This little sensor plays a big role. When it fails, you’ll likely notice a major drop in fuel efficiency. Keep an eye out for high fuel consumption – your engine might be running too rich. 2. MAP Sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure): 📉 A faulty MAP sensor can rob your car of its performance. If you feel a significant power loss, like your car is struggling to accelerate, this sensor might be to blame. 3. Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP): 🛑 This is a critical failure point. A complete sensor failure means your engine will refuse to turn over. It’s a classic case of the engine will not start. You’ll just get a clicking or silence. 4. Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT): 🌡️ A faulty ECT sensor can give your car a fever, leading to a dangerous engine overheating condition.
