@hannah.jungle: If someone said that they were going to steal 70% of your life, what would you say? Would you question it, or give it freely? notaperson.org #incometax #tax #government #freedom ##selfsufficient
You are right: all of us pay taxes, but your 70% is a gross overestimate. In addition, most people will receive more in services than they contribute in taxes. We are lucky that in the UK the government pays for healthcare, schools, roads, policing, cleaning of streets, pension, etc. Over our lifetime we receive a hell of a lot from society. Nobody can live in glorious self-sufficiency in a modern world.

That tax gets spent mainly on the less well off. Universal credit, child benefits, schools, hospitals etc.

What is not understood is that national debt isn’t debt, it is all the money created by the Bank of England that is in private hands. Debt interest is merely a vehicle for pouring money out into the economy on a constant basis through the bond markets. Therefore the National Debt is not a problem that people assume because the media dress it up this way, it’s a normal component of running a modern country which the markets keep in check as long as they think the government is being prudent.

This is a misunderstanding of how UK public finance works: tax isn’t a household pot that gets collected then handed to banks. Spending is authorised by Parliament/Treasury; tax withdraws purchasing power, manages inflation/demand and reduces borrowing. Debt interest is real, but “70% of your life taken” is not how the system works.
