Mr. Keating saw all his boys grow except for one. Then he had to leave the others. So I feel they all just never grew up in his mind. They all stopped growing with Neil in his point of view because shortly after he had to leave and during that time staying in contact was hard enough and I assume he was told by the school he wasn't allowed to contact them.
