For me: Exp33 and nier automata are basically Greek tragedies that allow you to immerse yourself in faith and despair. Not to mention the music. What remains of Edith finch has managed to use the medium to tell a story and walk you through it by making you feel like it —> the fish factory mini game is a masterpiece! Child of light is gorgeous with incredible music and is a tale that could be up there with the classics. Finally either journey or outer wilds

I think you have to add games as a cinematic medium as well. So many games are relished for their cutscenes and acting, which I think is well shown in Hellblade. Gameplay is mid at best, but that game is an acting and cinematic masterpiece, one that cannot be done as a movie, at least to the same degree.

I’d personally put Alan Wake 2. The perfect blend of animation and live footage is beautiful not to mention the true meaning behind the game being a representation of grief and depression

Love that you chose more systems-focused games like Balatro and Minecraft. The court approves of your submission!

NieR Automata, Outer Wilds and Undertale are my big three for works of art that use the medium of video games to tell stories that only that medium can

Idk about the other 4 but Sekiro would have to be on that list. The game propelled us forward decades with narrative and technical synergy, in no other videogame does every last detail count towards the greater narrative. While that narrative may be flawed the execution is absolute perfection. That game invented the equivalent to cinematography as a tool for videogames and nobody has given it a name yet. I’d also probably pick disco Elysium too

Outer Wilds is definitely the number 1 choice for me if I had to pick one game to defend videogames as an art form.

MGS2, undertale and P3 no doubt for me. They are all masterpieces that I don’t think would work in any other medium
