When the couple asserted their constitutional rights, the police escalated the situation, allegedly fabricating police reports and distorting Florida's laws to force the passengers to comply. Despite the presence of a supervisor, the situation became even more absurd as the female passenger, an American citizen, was handcuffed and imprisoned after being repeatedly asked about her nationality. After widespread public protests and the wide dissemination of video surveillance footage, all charges against this woman were dropped due to lack of legal basis. The couple subsequently filed a formal lawsuit against the city government and the involved police officers.
