Exactly a year ago today, at this time, I was driving to the hospital to undergo my (spinal cord) tumor resection surgery. I didn’t sleep much the night before of course.. So many thoughts and fears racing through my head. Having to kiss my daughter goodbye while she slept, legitimately worrying whether or not it would be the last time I got to do that… the mental warfare was by far the hardest part of the entire experience. I remember feeling frozen when we arrived. All I wanted to do was run right back out but inside I knew that I had no choice and that this had to be dealt with. My IV was placed, I was prepped for surgery and my heart raced until it was my turn to be rolled back. I kept it together in front of my family but as soon as I rounded the corner the tears just streamed down my cheeks. I’ll never forget locking eyes with the nurse that helped roll me back there. She gave me the most reassuring gaze and in that moment I trusted her to keep me safe. As soon as they administered the “calming meds” I knew it was time. The surgery was about 6 hours long and the tumor was much larger than the imaging had displayed. By the grace of God, the surgery was still a success! As soon as I opened my eyes, I smiled with relief. I did it! The worst was over. Now time to heal. The months that followed were nothing short of extremely painful and frustrating but I am here (with my new beautiful scar), I am living life to the fullest, I am more mentally equipped to deal with hard and scary things and I get to be the best mommy to my sweet baby girl!! I still have the weakness and muscle atrophy in my lower left extremities but I still believe that I will overcome that and get my functionality back one day. I guess, overall, I learned how strong I was through this process and as scary as it all was, I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone that was there for me in one way or another. The kind messages and reassuring words were everything for me. I am forever grateful✨ #surgery #tumor #recovery #laminectomy #tumorremoval #scar #cancerfree #grateful #1year #jan13 #mystory #hope #takecareofyourselves #fyp #youcandohardthings
