It's not overstock. That's just marketing. The garments are made specifically for these discount stores.

No such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism - second hand is your best option

tj maxx and marshalls aren't really overstock anymore--a lot of stuff is made for the store

It’s often not overstock. Lots of brands have lines designated for Marshalls, TJ maxx etc

Unethical- its nit overstock. 9/10 its cheaply made specifically for TJ Maxx and Ross. Very rarely is it actual overstock.

The only ethical consumption is limiting consumption. We over consume in things like groceries (esp when we hear a storm is coming which lasts 1 day yet we stock up like it will be 2 weeks inside), clothes, the new phone every year etc..

I have switched almost entirely to secondhand clothing, and when I buy new, I try to make it a brand like yes friends that I KNOW is doing right by the workers

instead of shopping at Marshalls or t.j Maxx or stores like that, I've switched to only thrift stores

How much overstock are these companies creating to fill all of the tj max/marshalls/rack, outlet stores etc in this country alone?

Benjamin Alexander :
most of their stuff isn't actually overstock often times it's just special versions meant for these companies that are made with lower quality materials than what they would sell at other stores. It's kind of like how when you buy a TV on sale during Black Friday It's usually not on sale It's a similar model made with certain cheaper parts or less features specifically for the holiday season. So if anything it's a slightly worse version of capitalism spending...

I try to be as ethical as possible and thrifting is the best way but I like to think it’s about balance. I can’t always find what I want and it’s ok. I don’t shop on SHEIN etc and I like to think that helps at least

If you NEED clothing buy it. But check what qualifies as need in your mind.

I dunno about those stores specifically but I’ve worked some w/ liquidation markets & there are lots of reasons besides just overproduction that stuff ends up in the chain. In theory it’s a way to try to recapture some if the inefficiency in other parts of retail, but yeah, I’m sure there are problems all around.

Generally number 2 - it’s like shops dumping their unsold stock to charity/thrift shops, it’s an out for them. Also, not specifically tk maxx but outlets in general aren’t just overstock anymore, it’s actually often poorer quality stock made to sell at a ‘discount’ at outlets. First port of call should always be second hand (vintage, thrift, depop etc), small brands, then if you really need bigger box stores you know you will 100% use for years to come.

Things are made for those spaces, it’s not always overstock. I believe in buying quality vintage as much as possible that I’ll have for a long time.

It’s not overstock anymore. It’s made for stores. I used to work for a NY based designer. They make a lot of money to put their name on the clothes that are made and “based on” their collections. It’s fast fashion

The clothing is made for Marshall’s/TJ maxx/any outlet store. So no, you’re just buying clothing from them like any other store.
