![Audrey Hepburn and William Holden in “Paris When it Sizzles.” In 1953 during the production of “Sabrina”, Audrey and her co-star, William Holden, had a brief affair. Reportedly, the two were madly in love but when Holden, who was unhappily married, revealed that he was unable to have children, Audrey made the difficult decision to break off the relationship. Her biggest desire in life was to someday be a mother. The two would reunite in 1962 for the romantic comedy “Paris When it Sizzles.” Despite their 9 year absence, it was rumored that Holden was still infatuated with Audrey and had never recovered from their split. However, Audrey had been married to Mel Ferrer for 8 years and Holden’s alcoholism had progressed to the point that director Richard Quine had to ship him off to rehab during production. From the book “Audrey Hepburn” by Barry Paris: “Drinking more heavily than ever, [William Holden] often arrived drunk on the set, flirting with dismissal. Axelrod remembered the night Holden climbed a tree by a wall leading up to Audrey’s room. Like Rapunzel, she came to her window and leaned out, whereupon Holden kissed her—and then slipped and plunged from the tree, landing atop a parked car below.
