Music and storytelling were also important parts of Ainu culture. Epic poems called “yukar” were passed down orally from generation to generation. In the modern era, the Ainu faced discrimination and loss of their traditional lands. However, in recent years, there has been a revival of Ainu culture and identity. In 2019, the Japanese government officially recognized the Ainu as an Indigenous people of Japan.
