People. This take is insane. Go see the movie. It’s better than the 1st one.

You’re the first one that said it’s a step down from the first one everyone I’ve heard said it’s a major improvement from the last movie

The Liu Kang vs. Kung Lao fight scene was incredible — easily one of the best sequences in the movie. But outside of that (and I hate sounding like that person), the film just didn’t fully land for me. What frustrates me is that Mortal Kombat has some genuinely great lore. A lot of these characters have tragic backstories, layered rivalries, and emotional stakes that most people outside the fanbase don’t even realize are there. So whenever people say “Mortal Kombat shouldn’t be story-heavy,” I honestly think that completely misses the potential of the IP. The material is already there. What’s missing is a writer/director who understands how to build strong character exposition while still delivering brutal, high-energy fight scenes. Those things are not mutually exclusive. And before anyone says “it’s impossible to balance both,” go watch Arcane. It proved you can absolutely take a game franchise, respect the lore, create emotionally compelling characters, and still have visually insane action sequences. That’s why I think Mortal Kombat still hasn’t reached its ceiling yet. The action is there. The world is there. The characters are there. It just needs storytelling with the same level of care.
That said, Shao Kahn was genuinely a strong villain in this sequel. Probably one of the highlights for me.
