@wired: What do you love about coffee? Is it the caffeine boost in the morning, the creamy sweetness of a cappuccino or latte, the bucket of filter coffee you can sip on all day, or the quick kick of a good espresso? Or is it the zen-like ritual of it all, the measuring of beans and the precision of the perfect extraction? If the marketing hype is to be believed, you can have it all, thanks to the best in fully automatic coffee machines. These compact countertop cafés promise to deliver a vast menu of drinks at the touch of a button, all with no barista prowess needed. But are the brews actually any good? WIRED tests a lot of coffee machines—productivity would grind to a halt if we stopped. But for this group blind test, we wanted to see what coffee professionals thought of the drinks produced by the “best” in fully automatic machines, without being influenced by any fancy design or brand awareness. We blindfolded our experts so they couldn’t see which machine was making which coffee, but let them take the blindfolds off so a) they could assess the drinks on looks, and b) not burn themselves. By the end of our experiment, it was clear that while money can buy you endless choice and push-button convenience, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee barista-grade, café-quality coffee at home.

We have the Ninja Luxe Cafe Pro Series and it’s amazing. It’s a sweet spot of cost and quality.

Would have been great to test actually affordable machines. This is such an out of touch price range. $1700 and cheap should never be used in the same breath. This is elitist drivel and Wired should know better.

I’m a big fan of Delonghi, they have the best quality-price products. They are one of the first companies that started making fully autos decades ago and you can hear of costumers still using 15yrs old machines!

You should throw in a control of a drink made by a barista.

The true test would be to also include a professional machine and a more affordable machine (such as Ninja Lux Cafe or something similar in that price range).

PSA: You can get a base Philips super automatic with effectively the same brew mechanism as the winner for $300-$400.

Well because fully automatic machines are not for serious coffee. Put it up against a classic espresso machine and it won’t even be close

if the machine can't do a proper espresso, then it's full stop. You're just masking a bad product by turning it into a milk product.

As a technician that fixes all of these machines accept for the Terra kaffe, I can tell you Phillips will be making the best coffee, espresso and milk for the cheapest. But that comes at the cost of it being the cheapest, components aren’t great. A lot of plastic, bad connections, etc. but the coffee is probably the best out of the newer machines. Delonghi is okay, never get a specialista, only the ECAM. And simply never get a jura and never drink out of one. The brew unit is non-removable (by the consumer) and the cleaning cycle doesn’t realistically do anything. Day after day I pull apart mold crusted jura brew units for the service that realistically SHOULD be done every week, like you can phillips or delonghi, but it is screwed into the machine using proprietary screws for Jura only. Don’t even get me started on part availability. Phillips is the way to go if you need a super super auto. Or get a nice grinder, an aero press, and a gaggia classic. Probably will cost you around the same if not less than the Phillips. There’s a learning curve, but these machines are nothing but mold filled cockroach infested robots unless you’re insanely diligent about cleaning
