@hikingandhistory: Hidden in the heart of Coventry is one of the rarest surviving medieval monastic sites in England: Coventry Charterhouse. Founded in 1381 for the Carthusian monks — an order that lived largely in silence and isolation — the Charterhouse survived the dissolution of the monasteries, centuries of decline, and even the Coventry Blitz during World War II. Today, incredibly rare medieval wall paintings and parts of the original monastery still survive, offering a glimpse into a hidden world that barely exists at all today. #coventry #medievaltok #hiddenhistory #historicplaces #DidYouKnow

Visited there not long ago. There is another Carthusian priory at Mount Grace in Yorkshire, which has a replica of one of the cells that the monks lived in, it’s really worth a visit to add context to their way of life.

Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, owned the Charterhouse in Coventry between roughly 1568 and 1571. He is closely associated with the site, likely responsible for Elizabethan wall paintings and using it for royal retinue.

We live close to Coventry. Been there once and wouldn’t bother again. It was just an empty house!
