Mark Hamill was in a real car accident in 1977 after the first Star Wars film. He suffered facial injuries and needed surgery. But the visible cuts, bruises, and blood you see onscreen in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back were movie makeup — not his actual injuries during filming. The accident did slightly change his facial appearance between movies, though, which is one reason fans noticed a difference. The filmmakers even added the “wampa attack” scene early in Empire Strikes Back partly to explain Luke’s changed appearance in-universe.
