@romania: How deep would you follow wonder? At Salina Turda the descent begins innocently enough, a metallic elevator slipping beneath Transylvania like a prayer dropped into a well. Then the world ruptures. The air cools into something monastic and mineral, dense with halite and old labor. Walls shimmer with striations left by centuries of extraction, pleated curtains of salt that look less geological than ecclesiastical. Dacians carved here before medieval kingdoms had names, and the mine later fed the coffers of the Habsburg Empire, where salt was once valued like white gold. Romania hides entire mythologies beneath its mountains, but this place feels authored by some melancholic union of Dante and Verne. The Terezia chamber unfurls like a subterranean basilica drowned in shadow. More than a hundred meters deep, it cradles an underground lake black as obsidian ink, perfectly still until a boat fractures its surface into trembling constellations. Above it hangs a Ferris wheel, absurd yet hypnotic, like a carnival stranded inside the earth’s ribcage. Timber balconies cling to the salt walls, remnants of old galleries where miners once hauled blocks upward by hand, breathing dust that embalmed their lungs over decades. The mine’s microclimate is famed for its purity and saline aerosols, long believed to soothe respiratory illness. Some places rearrange your scale of existence. Down there, among black waters and cyclopean walls, humanity feels temporary, almost incidental, forever scratching tunnels into eternity hoping to overhear the thoughts of the planet. You begin to understand why ancient civilizations imagined the underworld not as punishment, but revelation. Strange thing, descending beneath the earth only to feel more awake to the sky above it. Would you step willingly into that abyssal stillness?
