I'd argue this song really improved the text. it's mercutio communicating to romeo to abandon his long line of romantic pursuits. at the start of the movie he was talking about a girl who was "the one" suggesting it is a pattern of falling in love up till the next "soulmate" shows up. mercutio probably has noticed this pattern and it probably heavily influenced this choice of song for his performance.
