@based.legacy: Otto von Bismarck, Prussia’s Minister President and later Imperial Chancellor, was the mastermind behind German unification “from above.” The Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71 was the climax of his strategy. Through clever diplomacy, Bismarck isolated France. He deliberately edited the Ems Dispatch to provoke Napoleon III into declaring war. Prussia and its southern German allies achieved a decisive victory. Key moments included the Battle of Sedan and the siege of Paris, which ended in French capitulation. On 18 January 1871, in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, the German Empire was proclaimed. Wilhelm I became German Emperor, and Bismarck became Chancellor. France lost Alsace-Lorraine and had to pay huge reparations. The war completed the “Little German” unification and created a powerful German Reich but it also planted the seeds of future conflict with France. #ottovonbismarck #germanhistory #historyedit #shitpost
