These books make reading Philippine history so fun to read. Lio Mangubat’s Silk, Silver, Spices, Slaves brings to life long-lost stories from Philippine history that you probably have not heard of, like how American colonizers fell victim to a mysterious illness called Philippinitis, how Filipinos were once obsessed with baseball before the arrival of basketball, the N-word community from Germany living in the Philippines during World War II, and how a musical about the Sultan of Sulu was staged on Broadway. The essays here are fascinating because they’re not necessarily about big moments or personalities, but are still part of our history. Nick Joaquin’s Manila, My Manila is a history book of the city of Manila. The author, who is a National Artist, uses literary styles typically found in fiction to tell Manila’s history from the 10th century to the post-EDSA Dos years in the ‘80s. So, instead of just saying that the Filipinos, Spanish, Japanese, and Americans went to war on these dates and at these places, Joaquin uses colors, textures, smells, and sounds to tell a story that is very, very real. Meaning and History is a compilation of Ambeth Ocampo’s lectures on Jose Rizal. The lectures cover different things about our national hero, such as his relationship with science, his writings on Philippine history, and his thoughts on children, among many others. What’s great about this book is that it doesn’t put Rizal on a too-high pedestal. Ocampo sings his praises and gives him his flowers while still painting him as a human being with flaws. These books are available at the Philippine Book Festival. The fair will be from March 13 to 16, 2025, at the Megatrade Hall at SM Megamall. #BookTok #booktokph #booktokfyp #bookhaul #BookRecommendations #bookrecs #booktokphilippines #EduTok #LearnItOnTikTok #bookworm #filipinobooktoker #filipinobooktok #bookrecommendation #filipinobooks #filipinobook #classicbooks #classicliterature #thrillerbooks #fyp #foryou #bookreviews #bookreview #historytok #historytiktok
