If the ending results was still right, why does it matter how she got the right answers. His point was...Don't matter what the method was, Your not going to tell my child they are wrong because they took a different route.

I learned the box method and showed her both ways. We both like the box method because it’s easier to understand.

I agree with half of what you said because it is the same way, but from the original video, my problem is with the teacher, not allowing students to develop their own strategies and to give them a lower grade, even if the answers are correct.

The box method looks too jumbled (chaotic) on the page for me. But I understand it. However, if it is clearly explained that showing you understood the box method (showing your work) and the correct answer count as separate points, then I get it. They gotta take that L. However, he did teach her the same thing. He showed her how to correctly get the right answer.

I feel you, but also this isn't the box method he was talking about. Either way his child was struggling to do it the way the teacher wanted, so he taught them in a way that they could understand. The point of education is giving young people the support that they need to thrive, and obviously this child is not getting the support that they need. There's nothing inherently wrong with teaching children new ways to do things, but the problem is forcing every kid to do it a specific way and then punishing them for struggling. Especially when they've found a method to do the same thing in a way that feels more natural for them.

But if the answers are correct and the work was shown we’re debating preference not results this within itself is stupid cause it’s no point in it it’s just about who gets credit for being right

The box method seems easier than what they do here they do Eureka math you have to do the tenths and hundreds and a tree.

Yeah your right but not every kid learns the same you can’t explain something in 1 way thinking everyone is going to get it

it's not that different. Just practice what the teacher does to help your kid. Is it necessary to only do something one way? No. It's part of learning to follow instructions until you get to a place where you can do what you want. This method also allows you to be more accurate in algebra ect.

No they are making it difficult for the kids cause for one they’re never going to use this after school and for two why give her a 50 when she got it right it shouldn’t matter how she got it

Mother of adult kids. One of which is in college to be an educator. Math was NEVER my best subject. However, I did know how to find a tutor and communicate with SMEs in subjects I lacked in to help my kids. They also had YouTube and we watched it together if they needed me. SO GLAD MY KIDS ARE IN COLLEGE/THE MILITARY. lol just saying

I know what you mean.. side note, they are teaching math now by associating it to types of patters which is the math you learn as a pre-rec to computer science aka programming and pattern recog methods so that the next math will delve further into that type of math
