This reconstruction illustrates how the Colosseum likely appeared at the time of its completion. Construction of the Colosseum began around 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty and was officially completed and inaugurated in 80 AD during the reign of Emperor Titus. The structure was primarily built using travertine limestone sourced from Tivoli, supported by a core of Roman concrete and brick. The exterior and main load-bearing elements were composed of finely cut travertine blocks, while many interior walls were constructed with brick and then covered with smooth white stucco. At the time of its inauguration, the Colosseum would have appeared significantly brighter and more refined than it does today. The predominant visual impression was that of light-colored stone and plaster, with limited use of color in decorative elements, architectural details, woodwork, bronze fittings, and textiles such as the velarium (the retractable awning). This reconstruction is based on reliable ancient written sources, archaeological evidence, material analysis, and scholarly consensus, and aims to present a historically conservative and accurate representation of the monument as it would have been seen in the late 1st century AD. #coliseum #architecture #rome #History #art
