I have heard that Chinese prefer clothing with hanfu elements rather than magua inspired clothing, but nobody ever explained why that is the case. It was really nice to hear the reasoning behind it and especially in mandarin 😇

Great points about the Manchu influence! However, I think Caroline Marie Yim does an interesting write up on the intersection of this clothing’s history and how it references more than just Manchu Magua but also has influence of Mongol buttons, as well as the fact that this style was popularized by Cantonese and Hokkien immigrants to the west who were in direct opposition to the Qing. China has such a rich history that it’s hard to pin down its influence to just one period of time.
