my son's been working for 4 years, he's 17. he pays me $50 biweekly for utilities. it isn't a lot, but it helps. when he graduates this summer, he'll be paying $100 biweekly as 'rent' until he goes to school or moves out.

It really depends…If he’s NOT going to school and according to him, he makes close to $3300 a month, he can pay rent. If he is going to school, then he should not pay and save.

As a daughter who started working at 13, let me tell you the damages it did to me for future,I will now not let me kids work till 18. I am a mother and brought them into the world, it’s MY JOB, to provide, not them! Please don’t think it helps us learn real world things, it confiscates our childhood. Your kids have all the time to know real world problems when they are adults, stop kidding yourselves! We are the parents not our children!

What's wrong with paying 15% to your parents for rent. They have paid for everything for you, for your entire life. If you don't like it, move out and pay rent some where else.

I absolutely will charge my daughter 15% or even 20% rent if she starts to work while living with me - that has always been my plan for her. Here's the catch though, I wouldnt keep it, I'd open an RRSP in my daughter's name and funnel it into that, when she is ready to move out I'll let her know where her rent was going, show her how much it could turn in to if she keeps up paying into it at her age, and hope she has developed the budgeting skills needed to maintain it on her own. A little bonus for taking this route: in canada you can pull from your RRSP's to go towards down payments on a mortgage. Our kids are pretty screwed over when it comes to mortgages and retirement plans - any chance to get ahead of the game should be the priority of all parents.

my children lived for free when going to school, when they graduated and worked in charged rent, but I saved it and gave it to them to help move out.

and here I am wanting to build a multi generational home to help support my kids and wouldnt demand they pay anything. wow. i had s job at 16 because I was in marching band so I helped pay for that and if I wanted to go shopping (lots of thrusting trips lol) but my parents paid for the essentials and never asked for money

A minor is the legal responsibility of the parent. They can get into legal trouble for not providing for said child.

Not until 18 or not in school. When my son was 18, working full time, not in school and living at home I charged him $150 every two weeks for room and board. He said but you are my mom. I said yes, and as your mom it’s my job to teach you that nothing comes for free.
