Final Day (July 27, 2023): Varley, who was home alone, allegedly murdered Preston by smothering him. The prosecution alleged that on the day of his death, Varley filmed a video of the child, who was suffering from severe respiratory distress, without trying to help him. Hospitalization: The couple brought an unconscious, unresponsive Preston to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction, likely due to smothering.  Court Proceedings (2025–2026) Charges: Jamie Varley is accused of murder, manslaughter, assault by penetration, cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and taking indecent photos of a child. John McGowan-Fazakerley is accused of causing or allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault. Trial: The trial began in April 2026 at Preston Crown Court, with both men denying all charges.
