hi hi small question! i’m also half japanese, but my grandparents were incarcerated so i never learned any culture or language, so i was wondering if u grew up speaking japanese or learned it for yourself and also if u have any like customs? i’m trying to be more connected to my japanese side :))

hey, I'm quarter Japanese but only grew up with my Obaachan and moms side of the family so even though I look white-passing I never felt like I fit in anywhere. I'm having to learn our language on my own and with my Obaachan because my mom stopped speaking it cause she got bullied for it. it's been really hard to accept myself and my culture but I'm learning just like you and I'm glad you're trying to learn more about who you are. 🩷 Happy AAPI month to us! lol

It makes me so sad when I hear people have stories like this bc even when my European last name was slightly wrong or mispronounced it made me so frustrated. I’ve vowed to take the time to correctly say someone’s full name bc it DOES matter, and sometimes the little joy people get when I say it right is the motivation I need to continue. I’ll even go out of my way to look up names and slow it down to say it right bc sometimes my speech impediments make it hard. Everyone deserves to have their name spelled and pronounced correctly.

I used to be ashamed of my middle name, if anyone asked I just brushed it off and said they wouldn't be able to pronounce it. Now I love my middle name and I go by it all the time 🥹
