Restorations :
On most vehicles you'll get sometimes a quarter of an inch of a lip and we just go through the adjuster hole and back them off I know it's a little bit of a pain to butt but that's how we take them off

I use specialty tool to take off drum.when it breaks shoes are over extended. I put screwdriver into hole and push arm for adjuster in, then use brake adjuster back . adjuster it back in then you can pull off the drum

You forgot to mention to back off the adjuster, which will make it easier. And if you tap the side of the drum with a hammer the vibration will make it easier to remove the drum.

I learned something new. I would loosen the brake all the way down and tap the outside of the drum if needed

You can use a brake spoon and adjust the shoes all the way in as well.
