I get what you're saying, but just because people are constantly miss using the word or misunderstand the meeting doesn't mean we change the meaning completely. I feel the same way when I see people use loss and lost incorrectly.

the difference is just the timeline. like I've been celibate because it's been almost 2 years for me, willfully. abstinence is just like, for a short period of time? either way nobody should be correcting someone on that since they don't know.

Wait this happened to me and then the person I told I had been abstinent (celibate!) thought I meant something else and treated me like I was trying to stay away from drinks and looked at me crazy for having a beer. I regret using the word abstinent because it caused unnecessary problems.
