Kafka’s an odd pick. He doesn’t write in English, and The Trial isn’t all that confusing compared to the others

Woolf is not difficult if you’re willing to plunge into her world. I’ve read every book, diary entry and letter Woolf ever written and she’s a fairly “easy” writer to understand once you enter her rhythm

kafka is extremely easy to read, short books written in direct sentences and basic vocabulary. proust or musil are better fitting for this framing

We routinely read Joyce, Faulkner and Kafka in high school In Italy (in translation, of course.) Kafka btw isn’t English literature, or anything can be once it’s translated…

faulkner is my FAVORITE!! the trick is really to just let yourself be swept up in the writing and let it happen to you

Ulysses is so hard - you need a class to get through it really. (From someone who has a masters in Anglo-Irish Lit)

Not all modernism is exceedingly hard though, Hemingway or Fitzgerald are just as much modernists as Joyce for example. Modernism is not just difficulty of reading but a general experimentation with form, which can go in many different directions.

I read Mrs Dalloway for the first time last year. I struggled a bit but Woolf’s writing is beautiful.

I personally think Kafka was just describing what it’s like to deal with bureaucracy in (some) European countries. I once had a mini breakdown in a Polish building and kept thinking of Kafka’s book as I was experiencing the same.😅

Havn't tried Ulysses. Challenge accepted- will (maybe) report back 🫡. If you dont hear from me, assume failure...or I forgot. Both highly likely outcomes.

While it's not in the English language Proust's "In search of lost time" deserves a shout for modernist masterpieces.

I took a Faulkner class when getting my English degree. I loved school, sat in the front of the room, couldn’t turn down a lively discussion. Could. Not. Stay. Awake. In this ~20 person Faulkner class. Took me all semester to figure out I had mono. Thought I was just drifting off waiting to come to the end of a sentence.

The Trail by Kafka is a masterpiece. Amazingly, I think it is underrated. Metamorphosis gets all the attention but The Trail, and to a slightly lesser extent, The Castle, are incredible works that everyone should read.

I’m reading Ulysses now and it’s so good! It’s like watching a movie. Once you get adjusted to the language, it’s a very good read.
