@thestressdocmd: Many women describe feeling forgetful, mentally slow, or overwhelmed—but what’s often labeled as “brain fog” may actually be cognitive overload, a well-established concept in cognitive psychology referring to when the brain is asked to process more information than working memory can handle. Research shows that women disproportionately carry cognitive labor—the invisible work of planning, anticipating, and managing—which is linked to higher levels of chronic stress, burnout, and depression. At the same time, chronic stress is known to impact attention, memory, and decision-making, and over time, it is associated with increased risk of both mental and physical health conditions. Understanding the difference between biologically driven brain fog and socially driven cognitive overload is essential—not just for clarity, but for prevention and treatment.
