This includes plastic duty-free bags from transit airports, which are often confiscated on arrival. In some cases, even plastic bottles are not permitted. Rwanda is widely praised for its environmental policies, and the intention behind reducing plastic waste is something I respect and support. However, I want to raise a genuine question about consistency and clarity. On RwandAir flights operating from Kigali to international destinations, items such as blankets are wrapped in plastic, and food like bread is often served in plastic packaging. This means plastic is still being used in aviation operations both departing from and arriving in Rwanda. This raises an important question: is plastic completely banned in Rwanda, or is the ban applied only in certain contexts? If plastic is allowed for institutional or operational use, why are passengers prohibited from bringing duty-free items in plastic bags obtained during transit? I believe people would better understand and respect the policy if it were explained more transparently — for example, clarifying that personal plastic bags are restricted, while certain regulated uses are still permitted for safety, hygiene, or logistical reasons. Environmental protection works best when rules are clear, consistent, and openly communicated. My intention is not to criticize Rwanda’s environmental leadership, but to encourage dialogue and clarity so that visitors and residents alike can better understand how these policies are applied in practice. #rwanda #plastic #rwandair #aviation
