Mother Mary Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, holds a unique and honoured place in Catholic Christianity. She was chosen by God to become the mother of His Son and willingly accepted this calling at the Annunciation. When the angel Gabriel announced that she would conceive Jesus, Mary responded with humility and faith: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). Her response demonstrates her complete trust in God and her willingness to cooperate with His plan. Mary is honoured as the Mother of God, or Theotokos, because the child she bore is truly Jesus Christ, who is both fully God and fully man. This title does not mean that Mary existed before God or created Christ’s divine nature. Rather, it protects the truth that the person she gave birth to is truly God the Son incarnate. The Council of Ephesus affirmed this teaching in 431 AD. Mary’s role is also connected to her extraordinary holiness. Catholic teaching holds that she was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her conception, which is known as the Immaculate Conception. This grace prepared her for her unique vocation as the mother of Christ. Mary herself recognised that God’s grace had worked wonderfully in her when she proclaimed, “My soul magnifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46). Mary remained faithful to Jesus throughout His earthly life, including during His Passion. She stood near the Cross while her Son suffered and died (John 19:25). Her presence shows her profound love and steadfast faith even during immense sorrow. Jesus then entrusted Mary to the beloved disciple, saying, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). Catholics understand this moment as having significance for Mary’s spiritual motherhood toward Christ’s disciples. Mary also appears among the disciples after Christ’s Ascension. Acts 1:14 describes her praying with the Apostles as they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit. She therefore appears not merely as the mother of Jesus but also as a faithful disciple who continued to follow God. Her life demonstrates virtues such as humility, obedience, courage, purity, patience, and trust in Divine Providence. For Catholics, Mary ultimately points beyond herself toward Jesus Christ. Her greatest purpose is to lead people closer to her Son, just as she did at Cana when she told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Mary is therefore honoured, not worshipped as God. Worship belongs to God alone, while Mary is venerated because of the extraordinary grace God gave her and her unique relationship with Christ.
