This music is based on an ancient prayer to Lakapati in the Tagalog language, with additional original lyrics added. It is not a reconstruction of traditional Filipino music, nor does it represent how such invocations were originally spoken or sung. Instead, it is a modern and creative interpretation. The original chant is recorded in Pedro de San Buenaventura’s Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala (1613), one of the earliest known Tagalog dictionaries. The Lakapati prayer and ritual represent a key pre-colonial Tagalog practice centered on fertility, agriculture, and communal sustenance. Farmers invoked Lakapati, a hermaphroditic deity depicted with both male and female attributes, during planting season to ensure bountiful harvests and protection from famine. In new fields, during maganito (offerings), a farmer lifted a child skyward as a symbolic offering, chanting: “Lakapati, pakanin mo yaring alipin mo; huwag mong gutumin” (Lakapati, feed this thy slave; let him not hunger). This act, performed in field chapels called balag, paired with sacrifices to related deities like Lakanbakod, whose gilded phallus symbolized robust fences; eels were offered to him. Modern revivals include full-moon rice plates or herbs, reflecting Lakapati's enduring role as a nurturing provider. The rite underscores Tagalog agrarian devotion, blending gender fluidity with prosperity worship. It highlights pre-Hispanic spirituality's focus on balanced fertility for human and crop survival.
