THE DAY THE FEDS PRACTICALLY ARRESTED AN ENTIRE FLORIDA TOWN — EVERGLADES CITY’S WILD SMUGGLING HISTORY 😳🌿🚤 Long before South Florida’s drug era became the subject of documentaries and movies, Everglades City was at the center of one of Florida’s most unbelievable marijuana-smuggling operations. During the 1970s and early ’80s, the tiny fishing community in Collier County became an ideal entry point for enormous marijuana shipments coming from places including Colombia and Jamaica. Local fishermen already knew the maze of shallow waterways and mangrove islands better than almost anyone — knowledge that smugglers could turn into serious money. Then came Operation Everglades. On July 7, 1983, more than 200 federal and local agents descended on the area, established roadblocks on the only paved road out and executed arrests connected to a massive federal investigation. At the time, authorities said the wider operation had already resulted in roughly 150 arrests and seizures of about $179 MILLION worth of marijuana. And the famous story that “almost every man got arrested” isn’t that far from reality. According to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the three-year investigation ultimately resulted in arrests involving nearly 80% of Everglades City’s adult male population. The surrounding mangroves that once helped locals make a living fishing had effectively become highways for moving marijuana into Florida — earning smugglers in the region the nickname “Saltwater Cowboys.” IMAGINE LIVING IN A TOWN SO DEEP IN THE SMUGGLING BUSINESS THAT NEARLY 80% OF THE ADULT MEN END UP ARRESTED 😳 Did y’all know this part of Florida history?
