@sciencefunn: About 40 light-years away, there is an exoplanet called 55 Cancri e. It orbits its star so closely that a “year” there lasts only 18 hours. But the real kicker is its composition: based on its mass and radius, scientists believe at least one-third of this planet is made of pure diamond. How is that possible? The planet is incredibly carbon-rich. Because it is so close to its parent star, the surface temperature reaches about 2,400°C (4,350°F). That extreme heat, combined with the intense internal pressure of the planet’s gravity, squeezes that carbon into a crystalline structure. A few more “glitch in the matrix” space facts: The Smell of Space: Astronauts consistently report that space has a distinct odor once they repressurize their airlocks. The consensus? It smells like burnt steak, hot metal, and welding fumes. The Great Attractor: There is a mysterious gravitational anomaly located about 250 million light-years away. It is so massive that it is currently pulling our entire galaxy (and thousands of others) toward it at roughly 600 kilometers per second. We can’t see exactly what it is because it’s hidden behind the “Zone of Avoidance”—the dusty center of our own Milky Way. Time Dilation: If you spent a year orbiting a black hole, you might return to Earth to find that decades or even centuries have passed. Gravity literally warps the fabric of spacetime, slowing down the clock for you while the rest of the universe speeds ahead. Rogue Planets: There are billions of “lonely” planets drifting through the dark void of space that don’t orbit any star at all.
