Aun .GENERAL HASSAN GORRO Haji Hassan Hussein Abdi aka Hassan Goro was born in 1933 at Cigaal hill, some 20kms outside Moyale. He was brought up by his grandmother. He crossed into Kenya in 1950 and joined the British imperial forces called Kenya Rifles Service, KRF.He was trained at the Nanyuki Base as a sniper. In 1963 after Kenya secured its long sought after independence from the British, he withdrew from the Kenyan Army and went to Somalia to fight for liberation of Northern Frontier District (NFD). The NFD is historically Somali inhabited region in North Eastern Kenya that was historically part of greater Somalia but was included in British Kenya. Following a 1962 referendum where residents voted to join Somalia,the region saw major secessionist attempts, resulting in the Shifta war (1963-1967) and lasting political marginalization. The British created the NFD in 1909 separating it from Kenya to serve as a buffer zone. The area was initially administered as part of Jubaland before being incorporated into Kenya colony. Residents of the NFD primarily Somali and other pastrolist communities wanted to join the newly independent Somali republican 1960. A 1962 research showed that 80%of the residents preferred joining Somalia than Kenya. In 1974 the Somali government sent him to North Korea and subsequently China for training. In addition to that in 1975 he was again sent to former USSR for more training. He was heartbroken by the abandoning of the liberation of NFD,he decided to join another militia known as soomali aboow that was fighting to liberate Baal and Siidaamo regions in eastern Ethiopia. When the Mengistu Haile Mariam regime was toppled, Haji Hassan Goro decided to become an ordinary civilian.
