The temporalis and masseter are not like the other muscles of your face. Most facial muscles are thin, flat sheets that sit in the skin. They control your expressions. But the temporalis and masseter are skeletal muscles. They attach from bone to bone. They are the frame of your face. Research published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery confirms that these muscles do not just sit on the skeleton. They actively regulate facial structure. Based on the functional matrix theory, bone does not grow on its own. It is shaped and maintained by the soft tissue surrounding it. The masseter is functionally linked to the mandibular angle. The temporalis is linked to the coronoid process. These muscles literally influence the structure they attach to. Now think about what happens when the fascia covering these muscles loses its glide. The temporalis fascia and masseteric fascia form a continuous deep fascial layer across the lateral face. Anatomical studies show that these fascial planes are connected through the zygomatic arch and are in direct continuity with the periosteum of the skull. When adhesions form in this layer, the tissue becomes fibrotic. It thickens. It stops moving. And when the frame gets stuck, everything inside it collapses toward the center. The midface drops. The cheek loses projection. The nasolabial fold deepens. The tissue that should be held out laterally by a healthy fascial frame starts to fall inward. This is why treating under eye bags or nasolabial folds as isolated problems does not work long term. These are not local issues. They are symptoms of a frame that is no longer supporting the tissue from the outside. If the temporalis and masseter fascia are restricted, no amount of local work on the midface will hold. Are you working on the frame of your face or just chasing symptoms?
