Context: Douglas Haig’s (the commander of BEF) attention turned to tanks after he received a memorandum from Ernest Swinton (an officer who played a significant role in the development of tanks) in March 1916. He was excited to use them at the Somme to make a breakthrough and destroy German morale. He planned their first deployment to be grandiose and violent. However, it didn’t go as well as Haig had expected. Only 49 tanks were available for the day of the planned deployment, and 13-15 of them broke down before even reaching the front line. 27 tanks crossed no man's land, and only 6 reached the third objective. The next day, only three tanks were operational (hence the 90% ratio, 49-3=46 (yes, I counted the ones that broke before the battle as well), 46 outa 49 = 93.88%). Now back to Haig. Even though the breakthrough wasn’t nearly as massive as planned and the tanks didn’t perform well overall, he was still impressed by the performance of some.
