Well if they would stop spoiling books by giving WAY too much away in the description maybe I’ll start reading them

I see the appeal in theme-level tropes. Enemies-to-lovers, grumpy vs sunshine. But scene-based tropes annoy me, like there’s-only-one-bed trope. That is both a spoiler and makes me worried that the author is just string tropes together rather that writing an overall story

as a lesbian its one of my favorites because its often how I find sapphic books if its not visibly noticeable from the cover

What :
your perspective on authors highlighting their most important/unique aspects is super interesting but i’d also worry about authors just failing to recognize what they really should highlight cause they’re not great at social media marketing

Sentient forest? Have you ever made a post on sentient forests as a trope? If not, pretty please? If yes, I must find it.

They can be a little cheesy, but they’re also helpful bc the description on the back of the book/on goodreads/etc are sometimes useless or are a novel themselves and give too much away that a trope map doesn’t

I don't mind a trope map IF ITS ACCURATE!! I've seen a lot for books I've already read that were just... not right or were only mentioning a tiny surface level aspect of the book, not a true theme so :/

I love a trope map because a blurb most of the time is what the story is whilst the trope map is how the story is told

Trope maps are basically the book version of AO3 tags to me. For the same reason you like them - they're the things that the author thinks is most important about the story that should be advertised (or warned for).
And this is in contrast to the way most authors/books are bad at AO3 style tag advertising/promotion. They're often overly whimsical and way too specific (and long). No, just reuse your trope map labels and maybe expand on one or two.

I don’t find them reductionist. I think they do what they’re supposed to do, which is to find the audience that likes certain themes in their books while also not giving away too much. Sometimes synopses tell way too much and I want a surprise. Since I only read romance I want to go in almost blind to keep it interesting but I also want to know if the story has what I’m looking for in the moment. Also we’re on social media baby, every author is fighting for scraps of our attention and this is just the best way to do it in a static format atm.

i agree! they can be done badly, but a well done and unique list of the interesting elements of a book is the one of the best ways to promote them tbh
