I watched a danish film starring mads mikkelsen called bleeder recently, not too disturbing or messed up but the portrayal of violence in it felt more severe and tense than any movie horror or otherwise I've seen in a while, definitely recommend

There’s a Ukrainian film called The Tribe (entirely in sign language, no subtitles lol) that the Ukrainian tourist board must’ve hated, beyond brutal and bleak

Mysterious Skin fits this category for me, I watched it because I’d seen a screen cap of Joseph Gordon Levitt and Michelle Trachtenburg in the movie on Tumblr and I thought they looked cool. I didn’t read the synopsis and went in blind and it ended up being one of the most harrowing movies I’d ever seen in my life 🫠

So glad that you qualified that the Hunt is an outstanding film. That film sent me down a Thomas Vinterberg rabbit hole. If you want a tough watch try Irreversible. There is a blu ray by Indicator, and a special edition with a straight cut of the film (the film works backwards in ten minute segments). It’s a film that blew me away the first time but is a really tough watch. I had to stop it and get a glass of water. Showed it to my wife and she noticed me shaking. Lent it to a neighbour who is a firefighter. He showed it to his watch and all bar 1 walked out. He did say it was talked about for a fortnight afterwards.

After I watched Spoorloos (The Vanishing) I was so drained and think I genuinely stared at the wall for a while. So depressing and bleak and also could’ve actually happened to someone. Also Mysterious Skin was one I found very disturbing

bit more of a mainstream movie but my 14 year old son asked me what film scares me, as we watch a lot of horrors together so I showed him Buried, suffice to say he now knows a film doesn't have to be a horror to be either scary or extremely bleak

There's only a few horror movies that had me feeling stuff. Martyrs 2008, gonjiam haunted asylum scared the shit out of me first watch and kids Vs aliens because it made me feel pure hatred for that steaming pile of poorly smothered shit on toast
